Turiya is synonymous with positive energy manifesting through creative expression. A long time spoken word artist, educator, activist and author, her poignant lyrical observations take the form of slam poetry, hip-hop rhymes and soulful singing. The phenomenal solo artist also tours locally and nationally as half of the spoken word duo Good Sista/ Bad Sista and member of hip-hop/ spoken word crew Womb Dialectic. A college instructor and an organizer of workshops in schools and community centers, the "Good Sis" is definitely a force for positive change. Turiya has opened up for such known figures as bell hooks, John Trudell, Nikki Giovanni, Spearhead, and Saul Williams. Portland’s 2003 Grand Slam-Champion, she's competed 3 years at the National Poetry Slam Competitions (2000, 2001 & 2003). Portland's former Poetry Slam-master, Turiya continues to host various reading series and events at clubs, bookstores, community gatherings and colleges. Averaging over 2 shows a week for the last 3 years, she has shared her verse and vision with thousands of people from NYC to Seattle. She is author of In The Beginning, Cycles and co-author of Good Sista/ Bad Sista: Action Packed with Walidah Imarisha aka the "Bad Sis".
